► More details on Direct Push services
DIRECT PUSH RIGS and LIMITED ACCESS EQUIPMENT Gregg Drilling & Testing, Inc. has effective, state-of-the-art equipment available to apply direct push technology. When applicable, this method allows for the collection of high-quality samples in less time and at lower cost. Unlike conventional drilling, direct push technology does not generate soil cuttings which, if contaminated, require special handling and costly disposal. Gregg operates a range of truck mounted, track mounted, and limited access direct push sampling rigs. These rigs can be used to obtain a variety of soil, soil vapor, and groundwater samples or can be used with our portable cone penetration testing (CPT) system to complete CPT soundings and our hydraulic profiling tool (HPT). Gregg also owns and operates a number of combination drill/direct push rigs that can be converted from the direct push mode to the hollow stem auger mode when direct push refusal is encountered. This gives clients the opportunity to meet project objectives without having to mobilize a second rig. Greggs direct push and limited access rigs are listed below: For specifications on our Direct Push/Limited Access rigs click on the rig type above ▲

Ramset Hand Portable The Ram-Set is a portable, hydraulically powered soil probe unit designed for extremely tight space conditions. The unit requires only 5 feet of vertical clearance and has a footprint of only 2 square feet. The Ram-Set can be used to collect relatively undisturbed soil and groundwater samples to 90 feet bgs. It can also be used to obtain continuous lithologic logs with an electronic cone penetrometer. The hydraulic power unit can be stationed up to 200 feet from the sampling equipment, thus eliminating exhaust from the sampling area. The depth limitation of this rig in normally consolidated soil ranges between 25 and 80 feet bgs. Typically the less granular the soil, the deeper the rig can go. | | |

The MARL M5T, AMS 9600 E Powerprobe and Geoprobe Model 5400 rigs are hydraulically powered soil probe units. Probes are driven into the ground using a hydraulic hammer, which delivers a minimum of 1,800 blows per minute at a force greater than 15,000 pounds (66.6 KN) per blow. The hydraulic hammer allows the probes to be driven into the soil at a force greater than the weight of the rig thus allowing greater penetration depths than with a conventional hydraulic ram direct push tool of similar size. These direct push rigs are excellent tools for shallow soil, soil-gas and water sampling. They can be used to collect either depth specific or continuous samples. Continuous soil sampling is accomplished using a small-diameter (1.5-inch inside diameter) macro-core sampler, which collects 4-foot cores. Soil samples can be collected from discrete intervals using a piston sampler. The depth limitation of this rig in normally consolidated soil ranges between 20 to 60 feet bgs. Typically the less granular the soil, the deeper the direct push rigs can go. |
