Big Tujunga Dam Sediment Investigation

Working directly with the engineering team at Los Angeles County Department of Public Works, Gregg Drilling was asked to find a solution to sediment sampling and testing at Big Tujunga Reservoir. Recent rains have washed sediments from forest fire areas into the reservoirs and sampling and characterization was needed before removal.

Gregg custom-built a flexible barge for use in the reservoir with our CME45 drill rig to conduct sampling as well as Cone Penetration Testing (CPT) through the sediments.

Highlights/Challenges:

  • 13 locations in water 5-80ft deep
  • Direct-push sampling and testing of 10-20ft sediments
  • Clamshell sampling of shallow sediments
  • High winds in valley caused weather delays
