Newport Harbor Geotechnical Investigation
The United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) working in conjunction with the City of Newport Beach plans to construct a Confined Aquatic Disposal (CAD) facility within the Lower Newport Bay. The CAD facility will be used to dispose of dredging materials during the upcoming maintenance of the Lower Newport Bay Federal channel. The planned facility design is a trapezoidshaped excavation with a footprint of 435ft x 435ft extending vertically approximately 34ft beneath the bottom of the bay.
Working with local consultants and long-time clients, Diaz-Yourman and GeoPentech, Gregg Drilling was contracted to perform three borings to 55ft in the waters of Newport channel. The borings were located 300ft from the southeast corner of the proposed CAD facility to provide geotechnical information for design. Gregg utilized their small spud barge with a Geoprobe 7822 drill to accomplish the work.
